Social norms are the unwritten rules of a community: the shared beliefs about what is normal, expected and acceptable. They shape how people think a “good” man, woman, parent or child should behave, often more strongly than laws or policies. Many norms protect families and hold communities together. Others cause harm: they can make violence seem acceptable, keep girls out of school, stop people from seeking help or silence those who want to speak out.
BAKAID Tanzania works with religious leaders, community volunteers, families, young people and government partners to question harmful norms and promote positive ones. Read about the norms we are working on below.
