Who We Are

Organisation Background

BAKAID Tanzania (BAK-AIDS) was established in 2004 under The National Muslim Council of Tanzania (BAKWATA) and registered as an NGO under registration number 00NGO/R/1805. BAKAID envisions healthier life for underprivileged children, youth, men and women across Tanzania. Since 2004 we have implemented health and development programs in 40 districts across 15 regions, changing the lives of about one million Tanzanians.

BAKAID operates across multiple regions delivering evidence-based programmes that address the root causes of poverty, inequality, and health challenges. We believe in the dignity of every person and the power of community-led change.

Our Journey

BAKAID History

2004

Organisation Founded

BAK-AIDS established under BAKWATA (National Muslim Council of Tanzania). Registered as an NGO under No. 00NGO/R/1805. Began coordinating community service interventions across Tanzania.

2004

First PEPFAR Partnership

Became a recipient of PEPFAR funds through CDC and USAID. Began implementing HIV prevention and care programs in Dar es Salaam and Morogoro regions.

2008

Regional Expansion

Extended operations to Kigoma, Tanga, Lindi, Shinyanga, Mara and Manyara regions. Implemented DEBI programs reaching 47,670 people through HIV combination prevention.

2015

Faith & Community Initiative

Launched Faith and Community Initiative (FCI) in Mwanza and Geita regions. Trained religious leaders as HIV prevention champions.

2019

Re-registration as BAKAID Tanzania

Registered as BAKAID Tanzania following amendments to the NGO Act No. 24 of 2002. Expanded to 40 districts across 15 regions.

2021

AFYA HATUA Project

Began implementing PEPFAR/CDC funded AFYA HATUA project with THPS across 68 health facilities in Kigoma region, focusing on ART adherence and retention.

2022

Kizazi HODARI & GBV Programs

Launched Kizazi HODARI Southern Zone Activity in Lindi Region. Expanded GBV prevention program funded by NCA across Lindi and Kigoma regions.

2024

One Million Lives Changed

BAKAID has successfully implemented programs changing the lives of about one million Tanzanians across 15 regions and 40 districts.
