Adherence Psychosocial Support and Community Partnership (APSC)

1.1 Project Background and Description

Projects Summary: BAKWATA National HIV/AID Program (BAKAID) in collaboration with THPS, implements the Adherence Psychosocial Support and Community Partnership (APSC) program in 58 health facilities in Kigoma region. The program covers Kigoma Municipal, Kigoma District Council, Kasulu District Council, Kasulu Town Council, Buhigwe District, Kibondo District, Kakonko District and Uvinza District. The program works with 110 Peer Educators who provide peer education at their respective Care and Treatment Centers (CTCs).

Background: In implementing Adherence Psychosocial Support and Community Partnership Program (APSC), BAK-AID works with peer educators (PE’s) in collaboration with health care providers as direct service providers in all 58 health facilities in Kigoma region. Peer educators and health care providers are responsible for providing health education regarding HIV/AIDS to PLHIVs at the care and treatment centers (CTCs) as well as tracing net loss and missed appointment clients and bring them back for comprehensive care. BAK-AID in collaboration with the health care providers at the CTCs coordinates Adolescent’s Club Meetings, Psychosocial Support Groups Meetings (PSG) and Adherence Meetings assisted by peer educators. Either BAK-AID works closely with the Data Officers in every site so as to make sure all clients information’s are updated regularly.

1.2 Goals and Objectives

Goal:

To strengthening adherence rates and increase retention to ART among PLHIV in Kigoma region.

Objectives:

i. To provide adherence and psychosocial support to patients on care and treatment through peer education in 58 CTCs in Kigoma.

ii. To establish psychosocial support groups (PSG) for PLHIV pregnant and lactating mothers and their families and support the logistical management of the PSG meetings in selected PMTCT/CTC sites

iii.To enhance knowledge on ART associated side effects and health seeking behavior among PLHIV in Kigoma region.

iv. To provide adherence and psychosocial support to children and adolescents on care and treatment within high volume CTCs in Kigoma.
